Eco-homes – some advice from Soltrac

Eco-homes are characterised by high levels of thermal insulation. This means that fuel consumption for space heating is drastically reduced. In some eco-homes (e.g. Passivhaus) the highest energy demand is from hot water preparation.

In our view solar thermal should be a must-have component of the build, providing 60-70% of the annual hot water needs.

In addition to offering a solar thermal installation we can advise on integration with other technologies, such as heat pumps and wood boilers. Best results are achieved by getting all contractors to talk to each other at the earliest opportunity.

Provided underfloor heating is used throughout the building, solar thermal can also make a useful contribution to space heating. In this case it is essential to install a heating buffer tank in addition to a domestic hot water cylinder.
